Edgewater, Florida's skatepark, home to a wide array of underage cigarette smokers, dirtbags and jailbait hussies finally had an official contest there today. It was unbearably hot and several of Edgewater's most dynamic skaters were unable to attend. Matt Dement, who I didn't shoot any photos of (for no particular reason) should've won but it doesn't matter, because he won in my heart. I'll explain: He did a big trick, a big back 180 air off of the really steep pyramid, and then his crazy redneck dad started honking the horn, pumping his fists and yelling "That's my boy! My boy skates real good! Hell yeah!!! Hell yeah!!!"

Awesome.

I wish we could've given Matt's Dad a prize for being so epic.

A Scathing Critique of 1960's Doper Music.

I'm very weary of this bizarre resurgence of psychedelic '60's music that's come about in past years. With 15 year old girls wearing Pink Floyd t-shirts and 17 year old boys searching out similar garb, but of a more bizarre nature my suspicions, and my, perhaps too critical eye have been aroused. It should be said now that I've never participated in a "sit in" and I don't do drugs. I never really did.

But to make no bones about my disdain for "doper music" we really need to cut to the core of it: a mild case of OCD. I'm pretty particular about certain relatively stupid things. I don't have to drive around my block 3 times before I can drive out any further or anything, but I have particulars. One of them is a fairly impatient streak. That directly conflicts with a large majority of psychedelic music. I have no interest whatsoever in listening to some spacey hour and 20 minute Pink Floyd epic that not even Syd Barrett could decipher after coming down.

Now before you really get going, let me say that my disinterest in Floyd & company is not proof that I am "the problem and not the solution". I'd like to point out that is simply not the case. I don't eat meat and just because I don't want to get stoned doesn't mean I'm a pawn of the system. Fun fact: There's Fluoride in our public drinking water. Fluoride is a substance that was used in Nazi mind control experiments. See, I'm fighting the power.

Which leads me to my next point: The aforementioned "fighting the power" or the "establishment" as it were. What, if anything did these hippy bands contribute to such endeavors? Sit in's didn't solve anything, and in the case of "sharing and giving", a popular hippy/stoner mantra, what did these gents "give" anyway?

Daytona Beach sucks really bad, so I'm moving to Bushnell, Florida. This is a very very small town where my Mom & Step Dad live. I also went to High School here. I don't like referring to it as my hometown, as I lived in Lakeland longer but whatev's, I'm avoiding the point. The point is I'm moving back in with my parents. Sick! Silver lining on the rain cloud: Moving to NYC in September.

Mountains of crap. These however are books, and not crap.

It's kind of hard figuring out what to take and what to toss. This is obviously a "take".

Surprisingly my Mom isn't a big Slick Rick fan. An unfortunate toss.

Toss it all.

My career is in those binders.

While this would look swell in my family's living room, I don't think it will make the cut.

The entire time I've lived here I've never used the pool. This town has ruined me.

I'd love to call this post "endless bummer" but since there's already a blog titled that and it's a pretty over used play on words I won't call my coverage of Daytona's "Endless Summer" festival "The Endless Bummer Festival". It has no title as a result. Sorry dudes.

Started the day with a skate down the sidewalk and a collision with the rear end of this car. Awesome. Not even a cup of coffee in me yet and I'm already taking slams.

I'm off and on about regretting or enjoying my new haircut.

Awesome.

Nothing says "Buy with confidence" like putting all of a cars paper work in the window. Good show, sir.

I was hating on the hippy's so I went to the Bucks. As far as the hippy's go, I won't get into it but I was sour from my slam and the hot weather so the participants of the fest felt my mental wrath. Sorry for the, uh, bad vibes.

After my hateful mental wrath, a photo shoot with Tone in the recording studio.

Being in a recording studio isn't as exciting as it seems, despite many people's popular opinion. In reality unless you're a musician it's rather boring and mundane after a couple times.

Despite looking annoyed, Tone is always happy, he just looks hard.

The triumphant return of LFP Media's Neo Soul Night happened at Austin's Coffee & Film in Winter Park.

One of the more curious aspects of Ja'vion's personality is that he is always ready to pose. Even in a candid shot.

Starting off with a group pow-wow.

Building morale early on.

Letting his 14 year old son go on a trip to western North Carolina without him being present. It was a big moment for Duwuan and his Dad.

Into South Carolina, the fireworks were flowing free. Duwuan asked "Can we get some?" Away from Pops and acting up already!

Getting all wacked out on hot cheeto's and passing out. Felt like I was on a tour with Motorhead.

The following days breakfast, sitting around making fun of each other.

BCR You Serious?

BCR stands for "Black College Reunion" and it's a wild weekend of big rims, big personalities and big booty. Usually pretty wild and something I try to avoid but this year I got a photo assignment from www.urbanlinkz.com to shoot photos of the madness.

Since I'm kind of considered "The Rap Guy" buy a lot of my white friends they all had something to say along the lines of "That sounds right up your alley".

Dear white friends, it's all about subtle differences. I'm a 90's New York Hip-Hop man. I don't snap dance nor do I get crunk. I'm also way too fond of Morrissey and Belle & Sebastian to get crunk. It's like oil and water.

Anyhow, here's that madness I talked about earlier...

Sometimes when I get bored I try to cook up something lame to say as a joke, but don't say it. In this case I would've said the whitest thing possible: "What's Memphis 10? There's only 2 of you guys."

Isn't That A Car? The Sebring Experience.

Before driving down to Sebring, which requires you to drive about 20 minutes past Orlando and and 45 minutes to an hour south on a road called Highway 27, many people asked, after telling them of my impending journey, "Where is that? Sebring? Isn't that a car?" It seemed like no one but Frank Branca, old friend and owner/manager of Gator Board Shop, Sebring and Highlands/Hardee and Eastern Polk County's premiere Skate Shop and Mapquest knew where exactly Sebring, Florida was.

Once I got onto I-4, cruising through Downtown Orlando, making great time I saw this dude Gitin' Er Done on the interstate.

Complete with his dog in the back of his truck. He saw me take the photo and hauled ass.

Well anyway, I was excited. An adventure to rural Florida should, at the very least net me a few interesting photos or funny stories to bring back to Daytona. Once I pulled onto Highway 27 and went a few miles south I realized I was in Citrus country. Miles of Orange tree's followed with miles of nothing. Kind of serene.

Upon arriving at Frank's shop I was thoroughly impressed with the layout. A large shop with a nice mini ramp in the back and Frank behind the counter surveying it all. And now, a tour of Gator Board Shop.

One less alligator in a lake is fine by me. Frank kept a pretty accurate theme going.

Not long after that Frank's Mom showed up to help arrange the prizes for the following days contest.

Things were pretty hectic at the shop so I cruised down to the local park to roll around and snap some photos.

But this guy wasn't having it. Paying $30.00 for a yearly pass and not being allowed to shoot photos inside the park? Gimme a break! I complained to this guy and went back to Gator. Not long after the Cheif of Police showed up looking for me. He told me that there was no way I could go into the park without paying the $30.00 dollars and that he was upset I doubted his park monitors decision earlier. Big thanks to Chief Detman. I forgot his name so I started calling him "Sheriff Doonberry" which Trailer Park Tyler evolved into "Officer Josephus T. Doonburry". We had a great running joke thanks to this guy.

Frank is putting Gator decals onto vehicles for free so if you want one roll down there and get hooked up.

Frank closed shop and we hit the streets.

Sebring local Richard got a nosebonk in at this "legendary" spot right off the bat.

As did loyal lurker Oreo with a Heelflip.

Richard is seriously sick.

So is the other Richard. Frank's shop employee. This rough stucco ledge is a lot gnarlier than it looks.

Richard has a trick for every spot.

Another Sebring kid, "Fat" has some righteous pop brewing. Give him a couple years and expect 2 foot high Fakie Flips like this one.

Frank asked for a portrait of his other employee, Chris.

Posse deep in front of the Branca family business trailer. Also, I always pronounced Frank's last name like it's spelled. "Bronk-a". Turns out you pronounce it "Brain-ka."
"So you've seriously let me pronounce your last name wrong for the past 5 years?" I inquired.
"I guess." Frank responded. I guess it just never bothered him too much. Frank's Mom told me "I would've corrected you the first time." I would've liked that, as opposed to sounding like an ass whenever I mispronounced an old friends last name.

Then a Sebring Friday night!

"They aren't lying."-Frank concerning the Blue Lagoon's beer coldness.

Went to a house party to see my old friend Pat recording a song. It's really good.

This was seriously a name for a street in Sebring until everyone made the city change it. Holy shit. Someone told me they changed it to read "Monegro".

This is when Frank told me a story of when Hurricane Charlie blew through Sebring and it toppled a friend of his' corner store. So since the guy would get all his inventory back from insurance money he gave all the beer he'd stocked up on to Frank to sell out of a trailer on his family's propery. All this guy wanted was a cut of the profits. "Imagine a double wide trailer full of beer." Frank told me. So he was underage, drinking a lot of beer and selling even more and moving an equally large amount of cigarette's out of this bootleg booze trailer too. I'd be lying if I told you that isn't an amazing story.

This dude got really loose. Fun fact: This was the contest after party's DJ.

Sebring Loc Adam Starkey. He made up a word called "Yao-Jing" it can be used in response or in description of something of a high quality.

"Hell yeah!" Tyler continued. "Don't arrest me for nothin' like fishin' without no license. What if it ain't even my boat? What if my cousin gave it to me or somethin'? I don't know how to be registerin' no boat!" Then he said quite possibly the funniest thing I'd heard in 2008:
"Does it look like I know the law of fishin'?!"

Met up with the posse at my house and the neighborhood kids were hanging around.

Despite all odds...

Frank got raw. This wasn't a make, in fact he slipped out and took an 8 foot fall straight to his ass. He handled his business and toughed it out the rest of the day and even through a night session.

Went to the studio with my homie Phinesse. It should also be noted Phinesse is my boss, and that several Big L songs mention a guy named "Lord Phinesse". This, unfortunately, is a different Phinesse.

The title of this blog refers to me shooting some make up assignments.

"Portrait of An Executive" is the assignment. It should also be noted that this was shot on the first day of my spring break.

But I've been drinking a fair amount of mILC lately. ILC Skate Shop had a contest/video premiere February 23rd and I had a photo show as well. No photos of my show because I'm modest, no photos of premiere stuff because I was tired and was too busy watching the video. Here's contest photos!

This was kind of a big deal for James, the head honcho down at ILC. He's apparently been waiting since the step up's inception for someone to fall in it. Good job, Dillon. There's a first time for everything.

The old ramp was open, but a fresh coat of paint on the mini made the staff keep the kids off of it for the first 45 minutes of the day. They were kinda eager to skate.

Smitty, you did a fantastic job airbrush painting the ramp.

Shamon Burton works for DC Shoes now as a sales rep. He was busy...kinda.

I had to shoot some photos with long exposure for school so I shot skate photos. Say it with me: MULTI-TASKING!

Thomas was showing the new "mini quarterpipe" what's good. This thing is so fun.

Little Matt shocks me every time I skate with him. He was launching up the mini quarter onto the deck with a kickflip and manualing off of the deck. So he set up a landing.

Thomas is wayyyy too loud for his own good.

This kid was in the redneck family next door. He was hyped.

Flagler Beach at Golden Hour

Golden Hour is the roughly hour of day where natural light looks absolutely amazing in photographs. So when the Energy Skate Shop boys hit me up for a session at the Flagler Beach park 20 or 30 minutes north of Daytona at around 4:30 I presumed I'd be able to catch the golden hour. It went pretty well, and I'll put up some pretty ill sequences as soon as I figure out how to make those GIF things or whatever they're called.

Yep, it's a pre-fab park. That means a lot of unearthly slick "ledges". They're fun after some mild adjustments though.

Scraping a tail means catching a slam.

Or if you're Carlos you take a botched manual and make it fun.

Eval Alswede had it pretty well figured out. After we were done skating he said "Steve, you're pretty urban."

I stayed at Jake The Snake's house in Tampa and I had to go drifting with him. It was new and exciting and all, but the ride out there sucked. So horrible.

This is how I got to chill for the 30 minute car ride.

I rode out to Orlando suburb Winter Garden with The Watchmen and other fantastic friends and guests. It was a good old fashioned Battle Of The Bands. It was between a Psuedo Connor Oberst imitator, a band that wanted to be The Used really bad, a moderately ill Hip-Hp group from St. Pete and the aforementioned Watchmen.

Stay real still, this will look cool... MPC and Vatic.

This dude came with us and rode in my car with MPC and me. He told me he was an ill emcee. Turns out he is.

Where I'm From

Lakeland, Florida. 30 minutes east of Tampa. Hometown of Andrew Reynolds, Danny Renaud and Pat Steiner. The movie Edward Scissor Hands was filmed here.

This cleaner has been here forever. They've been putting corny/funny jokes on their marquee for as long as I've been alive.

There's also been elaborate Christmas lighting set up in this downtown park forever too.

Lots of swans in the 3 lakes downtown. All but these two swam off when I walked up.

My grandmother worked here from when she was 16 to 62. She started off as a bank teller and worked her way up to being one of the loan officers.

My Mom worked in this building for 5 years. It's Lakeland's Department of Children and Families. Hence the statues. She transfered to the Drivers License Office after that. She couldn't deal with the abused kids and broken families anymore.

This is the stadium my Dad played football in as a kid in High School. The Lakeland High School Juggernauts. That part of town is really bad now. Crime is big there.

You should stop by and get a sandwich downtown if you're ever passing through. A good place with good people.

So I'm working on this new project thing and I needed blank paper-backed stickers and paint pins and such. So I went to this place called the "Art Haus" on US 1 assuming they were an art supplies store. No! It's a children's art gallery! Imagine my suprise. I was expecting something of a store, and I got this:

Feel Like It's Gonna Be A Great Day Today

So I'm finally done with this semester of photo school and today was my first day off. No photo work for school or otherwise. So, of course I went out and shot photos.

Stacie and me went down to New Smyrna to skate the finished and skate lite'd Energy ramp. Shit's ill. Tary was there doing this ridiculous looking but incredibly hard one footed thruster.

Quick break for family time...

Then back to the shredding.

It was a Stone Edge reunion for Stacie and her former boss.

Then we went to the Resivoir ditch. I even got a trick. I'm not sure it's anything to write home about though. I've been able to do these not-so-dipped Back Smiths for years.

Met up with Evan Ahlswede. He had this sticker on his bumper. Not so hyped on it, Evan. Not so hyped...

Old friend and Sable Palm Boys member Dominic was there sporting some new ink he's gotten done.

He also did this. I really think this is legit for some sort of coverage situation.

Did I mention it was RIDICULOUSLY hot? I mean, this dude was wearing this and had a mild sweat going. Nothing quite like a Florida "Winter".

Then shit got tech.

Afterwards Stacie and her Mom invited me in for Cookies. I noticed that in a display Stacie's Mom framed a photo I shot of Stacie when I was 15 or 16. Wow.

We burned one and Stacie went inside to play with this candle.

She was pretty tired...but not too tired for an ASSLOAD OF COOKIES!!!!

It's 10:53 at night now and I'm so used to rushing trying to bang out some sort of photo project for school that I don't know what to do with myself.

I guess I'll go work on photos. Nerdtown: Population: 1.

The Watchmen played at the O.M. Lounge. So I went.

This dude was seriously doing this shit right in front of me as I was trying to kick game. Thanks guy.

The Film That Changed The World

Cruised down to the Myrna to see the premiere of Fully Flared. Quiet Flight put it on. I stopped by Energy to see if the ramp was done. It's skateable but they're still covering it in Skate-Lite to make it smoother. It's a little weird to get used to but it's fun.

Pulling up to see this bad boy in the parking lot.

John immediately strted looking it over. He loves that stuff.

He was especially excited about this product for the Christmas season. John's down for the kids.

While Carlos just enjoyed the fine sounds of Matt Costa and the Three 6 Mafia. (funny fact: the Three 6 song he was so into was Mike Carrroll's 2nd song for his part.

Meanwhile Jake Price was inside figuring the ramp out. He looks a lot like the kid from Talladega Nights who says "I'm All Jacked Up On Mountain Dew!" so I ask him to say it fairly often. Later in the night we tried to get a girl a couple years older than him to make out with him. But she wasn't down. Jeez, bitch!

Jake was spinning body varials on vert.

Joe Storm's Big Day Out

Well, not really a "big" day out. A more realistic description would be "Joe and me went to a wallride at some church and I shot a photo of a pretty well boosted wallride to fakie. It's a lot more awkward to get up on this thing than it looks.

The day started off at Stone Edge Skate Park and a weird one-sided staring contest between Joe and Aaron Collier (it was one sided on Aaron's part) then we were off to the spot.

Stacie Roberts came and skated with us later but my health decided to take a decline and I couldn't really get it together to shoot photos. Flash migraine?

"E= MC2" or..."Skating with the Energy Skate Shop Team"

The Energy Skate Shop heads are in the stages of building what will surely be a really, really fun mini ramp in their back room of the shop. To be covered Skate Lite, with a wallride and a Quarterpipe in the middle for those creative combo's I'm such a sucker for. The room will also be Air Conditioned when it gets hotter than Hell again this summer as well. New Smyrna Beach local Garr Poe is building it with the Skateboarders For Christ guys. And while (if I'm asked) I'll profess my fondness for the 5% Nation over Christianity, as well as a hearty distaste for Christianity in Skateboarding (blame it on a stern Southern Baptist upbringing and plenty of horribly biased "Christian" Skate events), these guys are really cool about it. Not forcing their beliefs onto people, even at their events (held at local Churches). Basically, they set up fun ramps in a parking lot, let the kids come out and skate, and if they choose, yes CHOOSE, on their own accord to go inside and hear the teachings of Jesus they can. If not, feel free to keep on skating. Nice guys. They also don't judge you on the way you choose to live, because they've discovered that Christianity works for them, and just live by example.

Anyhow, so I met the Energy posse down at the shop to shoot some photos of the building process and decide where we were going to skate that day.
